A domiciliary eye test is a professional eye examination carried out in your own home, care home, or residential setting for individuals who are unable to attend a high street optician unaccompanied.
-
To qualify for an NHS-funded home eye test, you must be unable to attend a high street optician unaccompanied due to a physical or mental health condition, disability, or frailty. You must also qualify for a standard NHS eye test, such as being over 60, living with diabetes or glaucoma, or receiving certain qualifying benefits.
For a full breakdown of eligibility criteria, please visit our NHS Eligibility page.
-
Yes. We use professional portable equipment to carry out comprehensive eye examinations and eye health checks in the home, including screening for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration.
-
If you are booking a private appointment, we can often arrange a visit sooner depending on current availability.
For NHS-funded appointments, the NHS requires a formal notice period before domiciliary visits can take place. Because of this, NHS bookings usually need to be arranged a few weeks in advance. We recommend getting in touch as early as possible so we can offer the earliest available appointment.

Not all eye examinations rely on reading letters aloud. We use a range of different testing methods depending on the individual patient’s needs, including picture charts, matching tests, and objective techniques such as retinoscopy, which allows us to assess the prescription using light measurements. Appointments are adapted carefully for patients living with dementia, communication difficulties, or complex care needs.
-
Yes. Family members, carers, or care home staff are welcome to be present during the appointment if the patient would find this helpful or reassuring.
-
Appointments typically last between 45 minutes and one hour, allowing enough time for eye health checks, vision testing, discussion of any concerns, and selecting glasses if required.
-
It is helpful to have your current glasses, a list of medications, and any recent eye care paperwork available if possible. We simply require a comfortable, well-lit space to carry out the examination.
-
If we identify any concerns during the examination, we will explain the findings clearly and advise on any appropriate next steps. Where necessary, we may refer you to your GP, hospital eye service, or another healthcare professional for further assessment.
-
No. We provide planned domiciliary eye care appointments and are not an emergency service. If you experience sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, flashes and floaters, or sudden redness and swelling, you should contact NHS 111, your GP, or your local emergency eye clinic immediately.

If your existing frames are suitable and remain in good condition, we may be able to fit new lenses into them. However, as older or previously worn frames can occasionally become damaged during the reglazing process, this service is carried out at the patient’s own risk.
We will always assess the condition of the frames beforehand and advise you accordingly.
